    Wood Fences

Nothing looks quite like real wood.

Wood fencing has a warmth, texture, and character that no synthetic material fully replicates. Elite Fence installs wood fencing using premium pressure-treated lumber and western red cedar — two species proven to perform in Massachusetts's demanding climate.

Whether you want a classic white-painted picket fence, a natural cedar privacy fence, or a board-on-board design with a custom stain color, we frame, build, and finish every wood fence to a standard that looks great for years. Properly installed and maintained, a quality wood fence is a 15–25 year investment.

Pressure-treated lumber — ground-contact rated for post setting
Western red cedar available — naturally rot and insect resistant
Custom stain, paint, or natural finish options
All posts set in concrete below the 48" Massachusetts frost line

    The case for real wood.

Six reasons Massachusetts homeowners still choose wood fencing.

    01

    Natural Aesthetic

Wood offers texture, grain, and warmth that synthetic materials can approximate but never fully match. For period homes and traditional New England properties, wood is often the only right choice.

    02

    Customizable

Wood can be cut, shaped, stained, painted, or routed into almost any design. Custom cap styles, lattice tops, scalloped rails — wood gives you design freedom that vinyl and aluminum can't.

    03

    Repairable

Individual boards can be replaced without replacing the whole fence. A storm-damaged section of wood fence is an easy, affordable repair — not a whole-panel replacement.

    04

    Cost-Effective Upfront

Pressure-treated wood offers the lowest upfront cost of any fence material — making it an accessible option for large properties and long runs.

    05

    Strong & Solid

A well-built wood privacy fence provides a genuine physical barrier that feels substantial. Properly set posts and framing make wood fences highly wind-resistant.

    06

    Proven in New England

Wood fencing has been the standard in Massachusetts for centuries. Properly treated, installed, and maintained, it handles our climate reliably — as countless historic properties attest.

    FAQ

    Wood fence questions answered.

Common questions from Massachusetts homeowners about wood fences.

    Have a specific question?

    Call 617-861-5199
How long does a wood fence last in Massachusetts?
A properly installed and maintained wood fence lasts 15–20+ years in Massachusetts. Pressure-treated pine with regular sealing/staining every 2–3 years is our most durable option. Western red cedar naturally resists rot and insects and can last even longer with care. The single most important factor is proper post setting — our posts are set in concrete below the frost line, which prevents heaving and movement.
What's the difference between pressure-treated and cedar?
Pressure-treated pine is chemically treated to resist rot, insects, and moisture — making it the most affordable and durable option for ground contact (posts) and fence rails. Western red cedar is naturally rot-resistant with a beautiful grain and aroma, but costs more. We often recommend pressure-treated posts and framing with cedar boards — the best of both.
Does a wood fence need to be stained or painted?
For longest life, yes. We recommend applying a quality exterior stain or sealer to bare wood within the first year of installation, then reapplying every 2–3 years. Painted fences need repainting on the same schedule. Unprotected wood will grey and eventually check and crack, though it won't fail structurally. We can apply a first coat at installation if requested.
How do you prevent fence posts from rotting?
We use pressure-treated ground-contact rated lumber for all posts, set them in concrete footings below the Massachusetts frost line (48"), and grade the concrete slightly above ground level to shed water away from the post base. These three steps together dramatically extend post life. We don't use gravel-only footings.
Can you match my existing wood fence?
Yes — we can match board profiles, rail spacing, post caps, and stain/paint colors to blend repairs or extensions with your existing fence as closely as possible. Board profiles vary by manufacturer, so an exact match isn't always possible, but we get as close as the market allows.
